Representatives of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) are set to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday, coming soon after a DEM Party delegation paid a pivotal role in mediating a call to lay down arms by the imprisoned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abudullah Ocalan.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he will receive the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) delegation "tomorrow," corresponding to Thursday, during his party's parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday.

Erdogan's announcement comes a day after DEM Party co-leader Tuncer Bakirhan on Tuesday said that he "thinks" the meeting will take place "this week," during a DEM Party weekly meeting.

"Tomorrow, we will receive the DEM delegation and meet with them, while also confirming our will to achieve the goal of a terror-free Turkey," Erdogan said.

The DEM Party is a pro-Kurdish political party that currently holds 57 seats in the Turkish parliament.

Following an October proposal by the now indisposed Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli to free Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan in exchange for the PKK laying down arms, a mediating delegation by DEM Party spoke to the jailed PKK leader on the prison island of Imrali. Bahceli's initiative was immediately endorsed by the Turkish president.

The meetings with the delegation resulted in a peace address by Ocalan that ultimately led to a ceasefire declaration by the PKK to "pave the way" for the realization of Ocalan's call.

Erdogan said earlier in March that if the Imrali delegation desired to meet him, he would make an appointment to realize the meeting.

The PKK is an armed group that has fought for increased Kurdish rights in Turkey for decades. The group is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara.
