Representatives of Arab countries and international organizations are assembling in the Iraqi capital for the 34th Arab League summit, with discussions regarding Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza and the new government in Syria set to be the most salient topics on the agenda.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The 34th Arab League summit taking place in Baghdad started on Saturday morning, seeing high-level representation from a majority of Arab countries who poured into the Iraqi capital to participate in the event.

Leaders from Arab states will gather at the summit on Saturday to discuss the latest developments in the Arab world, with the Israeli war on Gaza and the new Syrian administration set to top the agenda.

The summit saw representation at the highest level from numerous countries, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Emirati Vice President Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan all representing their respective nations, among a wide array of other leaders, ministers, and top officials from the Arab world.

In addition to Arab leaders, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez are also attending the key gathering.

Iraqi state media reported earlier that the summit’s agenda includes the rejection of “any form of displacement or expulsion of the Palestinian people from their land," adding that it will also “affirm respect for the choices of the Syrian people—with all its components and sects," while condemning the Israeli attacks on Syrian soil.

The summit is set to show “support for Lebanon in confronting challenges and preserving its security, stability, and territorial integrity,” as well as the full solidarity of Arab nations “in preserving its sovereignty and unity,” according to the state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Undersecretary of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry for Political Planning Hisham al-Alawi told The New Region previously that the summit will focus on a new approach to strengthen Arab unity and cooperation.

“The main messages Iraq wants to send were clearly expressed by Prime Minister Mohamed Shia’ al-Sudani,” Alawi said. “They highlight the need for a new Arab path that supports joint action and addresses key issues such as politics, security, the economy, development, education, and culture.”
