ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - In a phone call with US President Donald Trump, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for “urgent action” to prevent a possible spillover of the Iran-Israel conflict to other regional countries.
"President Erdogan hailed the recent comments by US President Trump concerning a resolution of the conflict between Israel and Iran... and stressed that urgent action is needed to prevent a catastrophe that could inflame the whole region," the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
Israel, in the early hours of Friday morning, initiated a devastating campaign of airstrikes against targets across Iran using Iraqi airspace, with the attacks hitting myriad military facilities and nuclear sites across the country, killing at least nine nuclear scientists and over 20 high-ranking Iranian military figures.
The strikes prompted retaliatory Iranian strikes on Tel Aviv, leading to a raging military conflict that has seen the two countries trade strikes and suffer immense damage.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said earlier that “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make.”
President Trump said there currently takes places meetings and calls towards that end.
President Trump detailed: “Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place. I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”
Efforts on a regional and international level have been intensified to bring the deadly and devastating conflict between Tel Aviv and Tehran to an end, but so far to no avail.
Before Trump, Erdogan had a phone call with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on the matter at hand, with both sides condemning the Israeli “aggression” on Iran.
Erdogan and Sudani stressed the need for “coordination on various issues and unifying efforts to enhance regional security and stability” amid the soaring tensions between the countries, according to a readout of the phone call published by Sudani’s media office.
Iraq’s airspace was used by Israel on Friday to reach Tehran, prompting Iraq to file a complaint against the violation of its airspace.
