ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Leaders from across the Islamic world on Saturday came together in Istanbul in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) 51st summit to discuss the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. The event was opened by a speech from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which he condemned the Israeli strikes.
“I strongly condemn Israel's attacks on Iran. On behalf of my country and nation, I offer my condolences for our Iranian brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Israel's terrorist attacks, bombings, and assassinations,” said the Turkish president.
“Just as Hitler's spark set the world on fire 90 years ago, [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's Zionist ambitions have no other purpose than to drag the world into disaster,” Erdogan added.
The summit was conducted in the presence of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, where he met with several ministers and officials across the Islamic world in order to rally support for his country in the wake of Tehran’s conflict with Israel.
Israeli forces earlier in June carried out a large-scale aerial assault on Iran, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and dozens of the country’s top military officials, prompting retaliatory strikes by Tehran, which has seen the two countries at each other’s throats ever since. The tit-for-tat violence has killed hundreds and wounded thousands more between the warring sides.
Araghchi met with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, before the summit kicked off, and later Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, as well as Jordanian, Saudi, and Emirati top diplomats.
“Israel is now attacking our neighbor Iran, pushing the region to the brink of a full-scale disaster,” Fidan told the summit, adding that the issue of Israel’s aggression is “neither a problem of Palestine, nor Lebanon, nor Syria, nor Yemen, nor Iran. This issue is clearly an Israel problem.”
Araghchi then met with Hussein on the sidelines of the summit, where the pair discussed “the latest developments in the region and the Zionist regime's aggression” against Iran, and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan toward the same end, Iran’s state-owned IRNA Agency reported.
Araghchi’s participation in the OIC summit came a day after he came head-to-head with European counterparts in Geneva on Friday, where he met with UK, German, and French foreign ministers to discuss the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the escalations between the two Middle Eastern countries.
The Iranian foreign minister on Saturday said that arrangements have been made for him to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey, adding, "We will use this opportunity to make the voice of the oppressed and legitimate people of Iran heard and also explain our legitimate defense and Iran's position," IRNA reported.
