ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Drone attacks targeted Erbil and Kirkuk provinces on Thursday evening, amid a recent surge in aerial assaults on the Kurdistan Region.

The Erbil-based Kurdistan Counterterrorism (CT) said in a statement that a suicide drone was shot down near Erbil International Airport on Thursday evening without resulting in any damage or injuries.

Dana Tofiq, director of Erbil International Airport, told The New Region that their flights resumed as scheduled shortly after the attack, adding that the incident did not incur any damage, and that only one flight was affected as its landing time was delayed.

The attack on Erbil came around an hour after a drone crashed in Kirkuk’s Badr neighborhood. The origin of the projectile remains unclear.

Mazin Gharib, spokesperson for Kirkuk Police, told The New Region that the police have received two reports regarding the incident: the first, that a rocket had been fired at Kirkuk's military airport, adjacent to the civilian airport, and the second, that a drone had crashed near the airport and been confiscated by an “armed force.”
