ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - For the third day in a row, the Kurdistan Region’s oilfields came under explosive-laden drone strikes, with three separate attacks targeting the Tawke, Peshkabir, and Sheikhan oilfields in Duhok province, according to the Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism (CT).
“According to information obtained by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism, the DNO-operated Peshkabir oilfield, in Zakho independent administration, came under two bomb-laden drone attacks at 6:00 am and 6:15 am,” reads a statement from the CT.
It added that at 7:00 a.m., a third drone struck the Tawke field, which is also operated by DNO, in the village of Tawke, in Zakho.
At 7:14 am, a fourth “bomb-laden drone attacked the Hunt Oil facility” operated by the US company HKN Energy near Baadre in Sheikhan district, Duhok province.
"The attacks did not cause any human losses, but material damage to the fields," the CT said.
The strikes came a day after a similar attack targeted the Sarsang oilfield in Duhok, forcing the US-based HKN Energy to suspend operations at the field. This comes as a spate of aerial attacks by unidentified actors have targeted the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk since late June, coming days after the declaration of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
On Monday evening, two drones targeted Khurmala field, and a suicide drone was shot down over Erbil International Airport in the early hours of the same day, with prior attacks having targeted airports in Erbil and Kirkuk.
No side has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The attacks have sparked tensions between Erbil and Baghdad, with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decrying the federal authorities’ silence amid the ongoing strikes.
The KRG’s natural resources ministry on Wednesday denounced the drone strikes as “terrorist” attacks which target “the Kurdistan Region’s vital economic infrastructure.”
