ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc in the Iraqi parliament on Thursday called for an emergency legislative session to discuss the recent “dangerous developments” following a spate of explosive-laden drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region’s oilfields, while urging the government in Baghdad to take “decisive measures” against those behind such “terrorist attacks.”

A spate of aerial attacks by unidentified actors has targeted the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk since late June, coming days after the declaration of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

On Wednesday, three oilfields operated by American and European companies came under several drone attacks, forcing them to temporarily suspend production, with a senior Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) official saying Erbil has lost nearly 200,000 barrels of oil production due to “drone attacks by criminal militias."

The KDP said they demand "an emergency session of the Council of Representatives to discuss these dangerous developments and review the government's actions in this regard, to strengthen the role of the legislative authority in protecting the nation and its citizens.”

The KDP faction, the largest Kurdish bloc in the Iraqi parliament, also urged the Iraqi government to "assume its constitutional responsibilities in protecting the country's security and stability and to take decisive steps to stop these attacks, expose the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.”

"These attacks clearly demonstrate that those behind them have no patriotism, but rather seek to implement dubious agendas that serve narrow interests at the expense of the interests and unity of the Iraqi people,” the KDP said.

The Association of the Petroleum Industry of Kurdistan (APIKUR) has already “strongly” condemned the attacks on the oil production sites operated by its member companies in the Kurdistan Region, calling on Erbil and Baghdad to “take additional measures to ensure the safety and security of our staff and facilities,” in a statement shortly after the attack on the Baadre facility.

The attacks have sparked tensions between Erbil and Baghdad, with the KRG decrying the federal authorities’ initial silence toward the strikes.

In a statement last week, the KRG accused groups affiliated with the Iraqi state-linked Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) of being behind the recent aerial attacks. Baghdad swiftly denied the allegations, saying the accusations “against an official Iraqi security institution are impermissible, condemned, and unacceptable under any pretext.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Tuesday ordered an “immediate” investigation to identify the parties responsible for the drone attacks that struck oil fields in the Kurdistan Region.
